Surf Church
Seaside, Astoria & Clatsop County
SURF – noun. “ The swell of the sea that breaks upon the shore.”
Surf Church is a network of the followers of Jesus in the Columbia coastal region. Surf Church get's it's name from our coastal region and a promise of God's Word, Habbakuk 2:14 "For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea." This promise of the Bible declares that every community and every region on earth, including ours, will know God.
Surf Church is a different expression of the Church. Research into the effectiveness of the American church shows our present system is failing. 3000 traditional churches close their doors each month in America. For every successful church ministry, scores of churches are in decline and ineffective in their mission to reach those who do not know Jesus. If we do things the same way we have done them for 100 years, we will get the same result. But if we want a different result, we must be willing to do things differently. We are not trying to be different to be trendy. We are desperate to fulfill the commission of Jesus, to reach this generation. The Kingdom of God is breaking forth upon the Earth in many different ways. This is just one of those ways.
Our vision for Surf Church is a network of small gatherings of believers all over the community, marked by relationship and every person functioning to fulfill God’s purpose in our lives. This network is bound together by relationship, and grows as our relationships expand to include others. We stress “being the Church” rather than going to church. And as such we teach that our lives are 24/7 expressions of the life, love, and compassion of Jesus in our communities.
We also believe that church should reflect the unique culture and people of the North Coast. We want to be genuine to who we are. We express our local flavor in the way we dress, the times we meet, the music we use to express worship, and the way we share spiritual life. Only by remaining genuine and approachable, can we bridge the gap between God and those who do not know Him.
Where does Surf Church meet? In many places around the community. When do we meet? On any given day of the week. What is the worship format? Our weekly gatherings are personal, fluid (changeable & flexible), and focus on relationship with each other and with Jesus. How can people find Surf Church?
